We will set as a starting point the construction of the Chilean Pavilion for the Seville Universal Exhibition in 1992. This is an important event not only if we consider the global magnitude nor the massive coverage but the visibility that this pavilion attracted because of its architectural and constructive solutions. Abstract forms combined with an expressive material technique -that suggest some cultural and local approach- develop new ways and possibilities of thinking about the discipline, which at that time was with a lack of perspective.(1)

A year before, Undurraga-Deves architecture studio won the Palladio Prize for their "Casa del Cerro" -Hill's house-. A single home on the outskirts of Santiago City that shows a remarkable work among the serpentine landscape in which is set in. This first international recognition made to a Chilean architecture studio was delivered by a distinguished jury team, integrated by James Stirling, Rafael Moneo, Manfredo Tafuri and Francesco Dal Co.

On 1997 Casabella magazine dedicates its 650 number to Chile, with a reflective scope around the global effect and its consequences over local architecture. It will be Rafael Moneo who writes about this subject on the editorial section: "Architecture and Globalization". Over this number we can read an article of the chilean architect Jorge Lobos who talks about Chiloe's local culture and architecture. Also, this issue exhibited the works of Teodoro Fernandez, and a young Smiljan Radic, Mathias Klotz and Cecilia Puga.(2)

Two years later an important event happened which will be relevant among the national scene. The foundation of the Architecture School of Talca was an enterprise lead by Juan Román -Architect of Universidad de Valparaíso- which has the mission of making architecture profession reachable to the people on this area through  an educational frame "based on material as the main issue and learning, the pragmatism of four connected workshops with an official academic network"(3)

On 2001 Mathias Klotz is awarded with the Borromini Prize of Architecture, on the category of Architects under 40 years, because of his interesting works which also was starting to be published abroad. On 2003 the 2G magazine released a monograph of his works, which was the first monograph dedicated to a Chilean architect. With the time, this will be the first monograph of many others that this magazine will dedicate to a chilean architect.

The following year the MoMA of New York will include one chilean skyscraper among a selection of 25 buildings over the world. It was the Manantiales Building, finished on 1999 by Luis Izquierdo and Antonia Lehman and the exhibition itself was called Tall Buildings. This work was about presenting 25 skyscrapers from different cities and exhibited them from an urban, technological and functional scope.(4)

2005 will be an important moment for another event in chilean architecture, this time towards to publications and information techologies. Plataforma Arquitectura was born as a media project, the first one totally supported on digital technologies which rapidly will open space to Latin American emergent studios and their respective works. And also as an opinion and discussion platform among Chilean and Latin American architects.

At this time, mentions about Chilean architecture on international publications were spreading exponentially. On 2006 the Japanese magazine a+u published a number called "Chile: Deep South" with the copper house 2 -by Smiljan Radic- on cover page and an introduction wrote by Fabrizio Gallanti and Francisca Insulza which synthesized the latest events over Chilean architecture since Chile recovers their democracy on 1999(5). On 2007 the copper house will be again on a cover page, this time on a monograph number developed by 2G with the complete works of Smilljan Radic.

On the national scene it will appear an important  group of students from Universidad de Chile which will play an important role over architecture competitions and cultural events. This group was called Arquitectura Caliente and in the following years they organized many students competitions inviting universities of all the country to submit their projects..

Political issues were starting to show some important changes that become positive measures towards architects. The design of some public buildings started to be public contests: the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Centre -former UNCTAD-, the Valparaíso Cultural Plaza -former jail of Valparaíso- or the Memory Museum and Human Rights were the first examples of this new political measures.

I WAS THERE exhibió parte de la producción contemporánea chilena.(6)

The 11th version of the Venice Biennale on year 2008, will bring a new recognition towards a chilean architect. Alejandro Aravena -Elemental- was rewarded with the Silver Lion for a promising young architect on the international exhibition. At the same time, Pezo von Ellrichshausen architecture office will be selected by the National Advisory Board of Architecture as curators of the Chilean exhibition. I WAS THERE was the name of the installation that exhibited craft pieces of some of the recent chilean architecture works.(6)

On year 2009, and after an explosive growth of readers, Plataforma Arquitectura decided to start an english version of their digital version called ArchDaily, which gradually starts to fade out the regional borders of architecture to locate on the global scene. That same year the Pritzker Foundation invites Alejandro Aravena to join the jury team -who will be part until 2015.

Also, the creation of the Latin American Biennale (BAL) in Navarra, Spain, will serve as an important exhibition platform for emerging Chilean architects and studios. In its first version, two Chilean studios will debut: Pezo von Ellrichshausen Architects and Grupo Talca. This last studio also represented an emerging generation of new architects educated by the School of Architecture of Talca.

2010 was a year with drastic changes over the Chilean architecture scene because of the earthquake that affect the country in February 27th. This complex scenario activated a series of public measures where emergency architecture plays a fundamental role and where the main subject of the discussion and debate focus on reconstruction, city infrastructure and social improvements.

That year, the 2G magazine published a new monograph over Chilean Architecture. This time the issue will boost the work of Cecilia Puga.

Another important event on the national architecture scene was related to the release of a local version of the MoMa Young Architects Program (YAP), which was developed in Chile by Constructo. An important event that boost emerging studios, which submits their works on a contest to build a temporal pavilion. Since 2010 till nowadays, this contest had allowed to build year after year a different pavilion where an explorative and creative spirit prevails.(7)

On 2011 another event will happen on the politic scene. The Architecture Area, inside the National Council of Culture and Arts was created. This organization would play a fundamental role on matters of public contests and cultural funding of architecture events.

The White Mountain book, could be considered as the first approach to curate and compile the recent Chilean works. This idea was raised by Ediciones Puro Chile and it is a big catalog of Chilean works from 1990 to nowadays. The works selection was made by the Catalan critic Miguel Adriá and it could be seen as a first retrospective view that intents to compile and spread an architecture with a certain value (8). That same year, the studios of Polidura Talhouk, dRN and OWAR Architects were selected to present their works at the BAL event, which was previously mentioned.

Year 2012 will be a year of international acknowledgements for Chilean architecture. The Retirement Chapel, developed by Undurraga-Devés office will receive the International Award of Sacred Architecture which is delivered by the Frate Sole Foundation. Also, the Adolfo Ibañez University building in Viña del Mar was rewarded on the Iberoamerican Architecture and Urbanism Biennale (BIAU).

That same year, the 2G editorial will publish its fourth monograph about Chilean architecture; this time will be the architecture works of Pezo von Ellrichshausen Architects. This studio would return to be published on a monograph one year later by a+u magazine on their 513 number.

Year 2014 will still be an awarded year for a few number of Chilean studios but at the same time will be a very intense year on international participations. The 2014 version of the BIAU will reward the School Alianza Francesa of Curicó, made by Hevia-Urzúa Architects. The Poli House, a work by Peso von Ellrichshausen Architects was rewarded with the MCHAP Emerging Architecture Price. Nevertheless, the most important prize will be the Lion Gold for the best national participation for the installation that Pedro Alonso and Hugo Palmarola developed for the Venice Biennale that was called Monolith Controversies.

At the half of the year, Smiljan Radic inaugurates on the Kensington gardens his proposal for the Serpentine Pavilion. Also, the Croquis magazine dedicates a full monograph over his works.

The School of Architecture of Talca made a first retrospective among their works developed since their foundation on 1999. They published a book that was called: "Talca: Cuestión de Educación".

On 2015 will take place the Expo Milan, in which Chile constructed a wooden pavilion designed by Undurraga-Devés studio winning the Silver Medal on the 'national pavilions' category. Aldo BAL selects the young studio Hevia-Urzúa Architects to present their work

Finally, year 2016 will also be a year of international acknowledgements for the Chilean architects, especially for Alejandro Aravena who became the first Chilean architect to obtain the Pritzker Prize and also the first to be designate as a director for the Venice Biennale. His proposal 'Reporting from the Front' was an intent to wide the range of issues that is our discipline and also to demonstrate how architecture can give response to more than one dimension.(9)

Within the same Biennale, the Talca Architecture School was the one chosen to represent the Chilean pavilion through the exhibition "A Contracorriente", which exhibits each of their student thesis projects under an idea that emphasizes the rural identity -from a cultural and productive focus- of the Chilean Central Zone.(10)

That same year, The Panamerican Architecture Biennale of Quito (BAQ) will reward with the principal prize to the 27F Memorial, located in Concepción City and developed by the architects Juan Agustin Soza and Ricardo Atanacio.
